Abstract

Rural early childhood education in South Africa continues to face spatial inequalities, historical marginalisation, and limited integration of local knowledge into inclusive pedagogical practices. This study aims to develop an Ubuntu-based conceptual framework that integrates rural landscapes, local histories, and geospatial perspectives to strengthen inclusive early childhood pedagogy. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by PRISMA 2020 was employed, examining scholarly literature retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and JSTOR. The literature was examined through inductive–deductive thematic synthesis informed by sociocultural learning theory, place-based education, historical consciousness, Ubuntu philosophy, and participatory educational perspectives. The synthesis identified three interconnected conceptual contributions: repositioning rural landscapes as meaningful pedagogical resources, integrating local histories to support cultural identity and historical awareness, and connecting geospatial perspectives with participatory and context-responsive learning opportunities. The findings suggest that these dimensions provide theoretical possibilities for strengthening children's spatial awareness, cultural belonging, and inclusive educational participation. Furthermore, the proposed framework positions rural learning ecologies as educational assets rather than environments defined primarily by geographical disadvantage. The study concludes that integrating rural landscapes and local histories through Ubuntu offers a theoretically grounded direction for developing culturally responsive and inclusive early childhood pedagogy. However, the proposed framework requires empirical validation to establish its practical effectiveness in rural educational settings.
