Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital financial services has increased access to online lending while simultaneously exposing university students to greater financial risks due to limited financial literacy. Students living in dormitories are particularly vulnerable because they manage their personal finances independently with limited financial resources. This community service program aimed to enhance Islamic financial literacy as a preventive strategy against online loan usage among students residing at the Universitas Sunan Gresik dormitory. The program was conducted in collaboration with the Dormitory Management and involved 30 students from various study programs. An educational, participatory, and empowerment-based approach was implemented through five stages: pre-test, Islamic financial literacy training, education on online loan risks, budgeting practice using the Sharia-Based Student Budget Template, and post-test. Participants' knowledge was assessed using a ten-item multiple-choice questionnaire, while budgeting skills were evaluated through practical exercises and observation. The results showed a significant improvement in participants' knowledge, with the average score increasing from 39.3 in the pre-test to 87.0 in the post-test, achieving a Normalized Gain (N-Gain) of 0.79, which indicates high training effectiveness. The proportion of correct answers increased from 23.3–53.3% before the intervention to 73.3–96.7% afterward. Participants also demonstrated improved ability to prepare personal budgets, prioritize expenditures, and understand the risks associated with online loans. In conclusion, integrating Islamic financial literacy education with practical budgeting exercises effectively improved participants' financial knowledge and budgeting skills while promoting more responsible financial behavior. This training model can serve as a practical approach to strengthening students' financial independence and preventing dependence on online loans.
